Course objectives
The course will present the current knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the main kidney diseases and of biotechnological techniques for their therapy.
The goal is to give the students the basic knowledge to start working on projects involving approaches of regenerative medicine for organ damage. This topic is of increasing interest for scientific research and for its translation into clinical application.

Results of learning outcomes
The student will gain knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the main kidney diseases and of bio-technological techniques for their therapy, with specific focus on regenerative medicine.
In particular, students will be able to:
- Understand the molecular and biological processes involved in renal organ physiopathology.
- Understand the biotechnological approaches in the field of organ transplant and tolerance.
- Learn the main techniques that can be used for pre-clinical studies of regenerative medicine
- Critically evaluate papers describing the use of biotechnological approaches of regenerative medicine in pre-clinical sand clinical tudies.
- Prepare and explain a presentation on one or more scientific papers involving biotechnological approaches of regenerative medicine.

Program
- Pathogenetic mechanisms and development of molecular therapies:
Alterations of the immune system responsible for glomerular and tubulo-interstitial damage, autoimmunity, mechanism of the immune complex deposition. Strategies for the induction of tolerance. Mechanisms of glomerular permeability.
- Allotransplant:
molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the main clinical complications, theory and methodology for the development of techniques aimed to induce a specific immuno-suppression, tolerance or to modify the organ immunogenicity. Xenotransplant.
-Regenerative medicine:
Stem cells and derived bioproducts in the regeneration of organ damage; stem cells and gene therapy, extracellular vesicles, bioreactors.

Learning assessment methods
The final exam will be a combined oral exam and a power point project presentation on the program topics, chosen by the student, with a discussion on the different aspects of the course. It will be evaluated the student’s acquisition of:
- Acquisition of knowledge on pathophysiological mechanisms of (renal) organ damage, including acute and chronic damage and autoimmune pathologies,
- Acquisition of knowledge on biotechnological approaches of regenerative medicine on organ damage and transplantation.
- Scientific terminology
- Ability to understand the physiopathological problems and scientific approaches regarding acute and chronic organ damage.
