Course objectives

The goal of this integrated course is to provide the basic knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of organ diseases and the physiopathological aspects, with a main focus on kidney and neural disorders, and to dissect biotechnical approaches for organ function repair. 

The goal is to give the students the knowledge to work on scientific projects aimed to identify therapeutic approaches for organ dysfunction and rare diseases and to explore the new perspectives and the research challenges of upcoming new therapeutical approaches

Results of learning outcomes

The student will gain knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the main neural and kidney diseases  and of bio-technological techniques for their therapy, with specific focus on regenerative medicine and rare orphan diseases. 

In particular, students will be able to:

  • Understand the molecular and biological processes involved in brain and kidney physiopathology.
  • Undestand the modern research approaches to therapies for several complex neurological disorders
  • Raise attention and interest on rare diseases
  • Understand the biotechnological approaches in the field of organ transplant and tolerance.
  • Learn the main techniques that can be used for pre-clinical studies of regenerative medicine
  • Critically evaluate papers describing the use of biotechnological approaches of regenerative medicine in pre-clinical and clinical studies.
  • Prepare and explain a presentation on one or more scientific papers involving biotechnological approaches for regenerative medicine and neurological orphan diseases
