Course objectives

The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objective of the course of studies in Molecular Biotechnology, providing to the student the tools to interpret the molecular and genetic mechanisms of the pathogenesis of groups of diseases involving different organs or tissues. The student will understand the inter-relationships between the contents of the basic sciences he studied in the previous years and the mechanisms of diseases. Moreover, the students will develop the capability to understand the rational underlying the therapies currently available for the treatment of the pathologies analyzed and those that are under development.

The course is based on a series of lectures grouped on thematic sections, focusing on pathogenic mechanisms and experimental approaches.

Active participation of the students is required, since students will have to present a selected pathology to the class. This will help them to develop communication skills, critical faculties, autonomy and the other competencies needed to present to the audience a scientific concept and discuss it.

Results of learning outcomes

Students will acquire an integrated comprehension of the pathogenic basis of human pathology and on the correlation between pathogenic mechanisms and clinical manifestations. The student who has followed the teaching course will have understood the main molecular mechanisms, the genetic basis and the therapeutic approaches of the analyzed pathology.

Learning assessment methods

The teaching course grade determination consists in the evaluation of:

  • Check "in itinere" the level of student’s attention/participation. During the lessons the students take a test with a few easy questions on the fundamental aspects of the topics covered during the lessons. Each correct answer will be assigned 1 point, and the result of all the tests will be expressed in /30.
  • Verification of the capacity to present and critically analyze the pathologic bases of a disease. Each student must prepare a short lesson to his classmates on a selected disease that has not been the focus of teachers’ lectures. The teachers assign a mark on the basis of the quality of information, the clarity of the Power Point slides and the communication skills.
  • Final assessment of learning: at the end of the course students take an oral examination on the topics discussed during the lectures.

The final grade will be the mean of these three marks.
