Course objectives

The course, which is part of the credits chosen by the student, contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the Master's Degree in Molecular Biotechnology. It aims to provide to the student the necessary tools to understand the foundations of the pathological processes of diseases that can involve different organs and tissues, through the detailed presentation of the cellular and molecular pathogenetic mechanisms underlying some pathologies selected as examples for the academic year. This will provide to the student the basic tools to present the pathogenetic basis of a disease with a scientific method and a scientific language. In fact, the active participation of students is required, since they will have to present a pathology of their choice to the class, during the course. This will help the student to develop communication skills and critical thinking to present to the audience scientific papers and to discuss them. Furthermore, the students can follow practical activities. During the laboratory activities, the student will learn the necessary tools to understand the inter-relationships between the contents of the basic sciences, studied in previous years, and the main laboratory tests currently used to analyze the progression of diseases or the response to therapy, in the field of the pathologies presented in class. This activity complete the notions learned during the lessons and will be relevant to their future profession.

Providing the entire course in English will be a useful tool that will introduce students to the use of the internationally recognized language in the scientific field.

Il corso, che si inserisce tra i crediti a scelta dello studente, concorre alla realizzazione degli obiettivi formativi della Laurea Magistrale in Biotecnologie Molecolari. Esso si propone di fornire allo studente gli strumenti necessari per comprendere i fondamenti dei processi patologici delle malattie che possono coinvolgere diversi organi e tessuti, attraverso la presentazione dettagliata dei meccanismi patogenetici cellulari e molecolari alla base di alcune patologie selezionate ad esempio per l’anno accademico. Questo fornirà allo studente gli strumenti di base per poter presentare con metodo scientifico ed un linguaggio specialistico le basi patogenetiche di una malattia. È infatti richiesta la partecipazione attiva degli studenti, poiché dovranno presentare alla classe una patologia a loro scelta. Questo li aiuterà a sviluppare capacità comunicative, facoltà critiche, autonomia di lavoro e altre competenze necessarie per presentare in pubblico un concetto scientifico e discuterlo. Inoltre, il corso prevede anche attività pratiche in laboratorio. Attraverso le esercitazioni, verranno forniti allo studente gli strumenti necessari per comprendere le relazioni tra i contenuti delle scienze di base, studiati negli anni precedenti, e alcuni dei principali test di laboratorio attualmente utilizzati per analizzare la progressione delle malattie o la risposta alla terapia, nell’ambito delle patologie presentate a lezione. Questo concorrerà a completare le conoscenze apprese durante le lezioni e fornirà uno strumento rilevante nell’ambito della futura professione degli studenti.

L'erogazione dell'intero corso di laurea in lingua inglese avvierà gli studenti all'utilizzo della lingua internazionalmente riconosciuta in ambito scientifico.

Results of learning outcomes

- Through the knowledge provided by this course, the student will understand the main molecular mechanisms, the genetic basis and the therapeutic approaches in the context of the analyzed pathologies, which will be a fundamental basis for a more extensive integrated understanding of the pathogenic basis of different diseases.

- The student who has followed the course and the practical exercises will know the main methods and technologies used in the laboratory and employed in the field of the diseases presented, but which can be extended and applied to multiple diseases for a future profession in the laboratory.

- During the course the student will acquire the knowledge needed to develop independent thinking in the context of understanding the correlations between the pathogenic mechanisms and the clinical manifestations of diseases. The student will develop communication skills, critical faculties, autonomy and other skills necessary to present a scientific concept to the public and discuss it, which will be highlighted by the student's choice of a pathology to study and present with scientific method and language within the course.

- Attraverso le conoscenze fornite da questo insegnamento lo studente comprenderà i principali meccanismi molecolari, le basi genetiche e gli approcci terapeutici delle patologie analizzate, che saranno una base teorica fondamentale per una più estesa comprensione integrata delle basi patogenetiche delle malattie.

- Lo studente che ha seguito il corso e le esercitazioni pratiche, conoscerà le principali metodiche e tecnologie utilizzate in laboratorio ed impiegate nell’ambito delle malattie presentate ma estendibili e applicabili a livelli più ampi per una futura professione in laboratorio.

- Durante il corso lo studente acquisirà le nozioni necessarie per sviluppare un pensiero autonomo nell’ambito della comprensione delle correlazioni tra i meccanismi patogenetici e le manifestazioni cliniche delle malattie. Lo studente svilupperà capacità comunicative, facoltà critiche, autonomia di lavoro e altre competenze necessarie per presentare al pubblico un concetto scientifico e discuterlo, che verranno evidenziate mediante la scelta da parte dello studente di una patologia da studiare e presentare con metodo e linguaggio scientifico durante il corso.

Program

The course is divided into three phases:

1. lectures on the pathology of pancreatic cancer and osteosarcoma;
2. practical experience in the laboratory: pancreatic tissues or bone tumor cells will be analyzed by flow cytometry or immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of tumor markers, lymphocytic infiltrate, tumor cell proliferative index, etc...
3. Organization of group or individual work (depending on the number of students signed up in this optional course) for the presentation of the pathological basis, conventional or innovative therapies of a chosen disease.

Il corso si articola in tre fasi:

1. lezioni frontali sulla patologia del cancro del pancreas e dell’osteosarcoma, un tumore pediatrico delle ossa
2. esperienza pratica in laboratorio: cellule o tessuti tumorali del pancreas o dell’osso verranno analizzati mediante citometria a flusso o immunoistochimica per valutare l'espressione di marcatori tumorali, l’infiltrato linfocitario, l’indice proliferativo delle cellule tumorali, ecc...
3. Organizzazione di gruppi di lavoro o individuali (a seconda del numero di studenti iscritti a questo corso opzionale) per la presentazione delle basi patologiche di una malattia a scelta, delle terapie in corso e in studio.

Course delivery

The course will have a total duration of 32 hours (4 CFU) and includes lectures on pancreatic and bone (osteosarcoma) cancer, which will take place with the aid of multimedia tools (Power Point presentations, videos, etc..) and practical activities in the laboratory. During the course, time will also be dedicated to student presentations on a pathology of their choice, which will contribute to the final evaluation. The PDF presentations will be made available by the teacher on the Moodle platform.

Il corso avrà una durata complessiva di 32 ore (4 CFU) e prevede lezioni frontali sul tumore del pancreas e delle ossa (osteosarcoma), che si svolgeranno con l’ausilio di strumenti multimediali (presentazioni Powr Point, video, etc..) e di attività pratiche in laboratorio. Durante il corso inoltre verrà dedicato tempo alle presentazioni degli studenti riguardanti una patologia a scelta, che concorreranno alla valutazione finale. Le presentazioni in PDF saranno rese disponibili dal docente sulla piattaforma Moodle.

Learning assessment methods

The final evaluation of the student at the end of the course will be the result:

• of a learning assessment at the end of the course, during which students take an oral exam on the topics discussed during the lectures in class or during the practical activity in the laboratory.
• of the ability to critically analyze and present the pathological bases of a chosen disease using an appropriate scientific language. In fact, during the course students will prepare a short Power Point presentation on a selected pathology. The teachers assign a mark based on the clarity of the slides and communication skills.

The final grade will be the mean of these two marks.

La valutazione finale dello studente al termine dal corso sarà il risultato:

• di una verifica dell'apprendimento al termine del corso, durante la quale gli studenti sostengono una prova orale sugli argomenti trattati a lezione e durante le esercitazioni in laboratorio.

• della capacità di analizzare criticamente e presentare con un linguaggio scientifico appropriato le basi patologiche di una malattia a scelta. Durante il corso infatti gli studenti prepareranno una breve presentazione Power Point sulla patogenesi e sulle terapie disponibili per una patologia da loro selezionata. I docenti assegnano un voto in base alla alla chiarezza delle diapositive e alle capacità comunicative.

Il voto finale sarà la media di questi due voti.

The slides of the presentations shown in class will be uploaded in PDF format at the end of the class on the Moodle platform; at the end of the slides a quiz will be included to help students to identify and understand the key points of the topics discussed during the lesson.
