Research topics
Throughout her career, Valeria Poli was interested in studying inflammatory cytokines signaling pathways and the pathological consequences of their dysregulation. In recent years the laboratory has focused particularly on the analysis of the biological functions of the transcription factor STAT3. These studies allowed us to demonstrate how aberrant STAT3 constitutive activities may drive oncogenesis (Barbieri et al., Cancer Res 2010), and helped to unveil a new role of constitutively activated STAT3 in regulating cell energy metabolism (Demaria et al., Ageing 2010; Cell Death and Differentiation 2012). Recently we have opened a new line of research aimed at clarifying STAT3 functions in heart auto-immunity and cardiac inflammation (Camporeale, Marino et al., EMBO Mol Med 2013). The main present projects in the laboratory include characterization of the canonical and non-canonical functions of STAT3 and its target RNAs in mammary tumorigenesis, unveiling the role of the mesenchymal stroma (Cancer Associated Fibroblasts) in supporting tumor growth and metastasis in breast and prostate cancer, identification and functional validation of non coding RNAs regulated by STAT3 in health and disease conditions, and the identification of targeted therapeutic approaches to cure auto-immune myocarditis.
