Course objectives

The course tackles advanced topics of gene regulation at the genomic and post-transcriptional level. These aspects are presented in two modules: (1) The Genetic Basis of Cancer, which uses cancer as a paradigm to understand genomic (dys)regulation of cell function: and (2) Molecular Dynamics of Cellular Processes, which examines post-transcriptional regulations at the level of mRNA and proteins in different systems.

Results of learning outcomes

Students will gain both broad knowledge on the latest discoveries in the functional genomics field, and the critical thinking and analysis skills needed to keep up with this rapidly moving area.

Oggetto:

Course delivery

Frontal lessons with a high degree of interactivity to stimulate discussion of the topics presented.

Oggetto:

Learning assessment methods

Oral examination. The oral tests will be evaluated based on critical thinking skills, the quality of the presentation and knowledge of the subjects of the course. The critical discussion of a scientific publication is an integral part of the exam. The vote will be expressed as a fraction of 30 (eventually cum laude) and will represent the average of the marks of the all Functional Genomics modules.

Support activities

Laboratory activities carried out by the students for their thesis are considered as practical exercises

Program

Module 1 - The Genetic Basis of Cancer

Cancer: a genetic disease. The causes of cancer. Genetic alterations and tumor progression. Cancer genes: Oncogenes, Tumor Suppressor genes, Gatekeepers and Caretakers. Tumor related mutational signatures. Patient derived models (cells, organoids and PDX) to study tumor progression and response to therapy. Genetic profiling of human tumors. Genetic basis of targeted cancer therapy. Diagnosis and personalized treatment. Genomic driven biomarkers.

Module 2 – Molecular Dynamics of Cellular Processes

The program is based on the deepening of key scientific issues coming out in recent publications. The topics covered will address the molecular mechanisms underlying post-transcriptional regulation at the RNA and protein level. The program will cover  alternative splicing and polyadenylation, mRNA modification and homeostasis, protein folding and degradation, and regulation of stress responses. These aspects will be examined in different areas of biomedicine, including cancer, neural, cardiovascular, and immune biology.
