Course objectives

The course aims at providing the students with the fundamentals of supramolecular chemistry and spectroscopies for application in biomedicine.

Supramolecular chemistry has primarily found its inspiration in biological molecules, such as proteins, lipids, sugars and nucleic acids and their interactions. Currently the supramolecular assembly of designed compounds can be controlled to great extent. This provides the opportunity to combine these synthetic supramolecular elements with biomolecules for the study of biological phenomena and the development of new drugs and diagnostic agents.

In particular, the first part of the course deals with the understanding of molecular recognition, of the interactions responsible for the formation of supramolecular systems, the role of metals in biological systems and medicin.

The second part of the course deals with the basis and application of spectroscopic tecniques in biological research (UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, NMR). It will provide tools for studing biological systems and intermolecular interactions.

Course delivery

The course will be delivered through lessons in the lecture room (90%) and in labs (10%), for focus on some methodological aspects.

The course is divided into three part:

-Supramolecular chemistry (3 CFU, 24h)- Module 1

-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance NMR (3 CFU, 24 h)- Module 2

-Electronic (absorption and emission) spectroscopies (2 CFU, 16 h)- Module 2

Learning assessment methods

The exam will be written + oral. The final score will be the weighted mean of the three parts of the course.

The "laude" will be granted to students who have obtained 30/30 in each part of the exam and at least one "laude".

Program

The course is divided in two modules:

-supramolecular and bioinorganic chemistry (Dr. G. Ferrauto). The module is focused on supramolecular chemistry description (basic concepts and biomedical applications). A particular focus will be devoted to the understanding of the fundamentals of molecular recognition (host-guest), the chemical interactions responsible for the formation of biological membranes and supramolecular systems, the role of metals in biological systems and medicine and basis of coordination chemistry.

-spectroscopy of biomolecules (prof. G Berlier, prof. S. Geninatti Crich). This module has the aim of  providing the physical theoretical and practical concepts of the main spectroscopic methods currently used in biological research (UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, NMR) fundamental for the study of the intermolecular interactions.

A detailed description of the two modules are in the corresponding module webpage.
