Course objectives

Acquisition of competences in the field of mass spectrometry analyses.

The objective of the course is to provide students with the principles for the development and application of methods based on mass spectrometry in the biochemical and biopharmaceutical fields.

  • Understand the value of mass spectrometry techniques to address biochemical and biotechnological problems
  • Know when and how applying specific mass spectrometry techniques

LC-MS and GC-MS applications. Advanced applications and mrthodologies in biology and biotechnologies. 

Metabolomics by Mass Spectrometry. Targeted and Untargeted metabolic profiling. Multivariate analysis, PCA, OPLS-DA, HCA, Pathway Analysis. Online/Offline Database Searching, Structural Identification by MS/MS Analysis. High-Definition Mass Spectrometry, Ion Mobility Mass
Spectrometry. MALDI-MSI, DESI-MSI, PESI-MS. Technique of Cryosectioning, Lazar Microdissection. Stability of Metabolites in Biological Samples. Application of Mass Spectrometry for Clinical Studies, and a large-scale cohort study. Multi-Omics Analysis.

Course delivery

The course is delivered face-to-face, in class lectures and lab visits. The total course time is 24 hours.

After the recent emergency situation, the teaching will be made compatible with an integrated learning environment in e-learning mode, suitable for face-to-face situations, those in which teaching is provided entirely online and forms of blended teaching.

Depending on the changing situations, the platform course will welcome: lesson materials (video recordings and / or audio presentations); exercises to be carried out online, but also face-to-face; in-depth teaching materials that can be discussed through a forum and / or in the classroom during the lesson-debate. The objective of the learning environment is to create continuity between the different teaching moments and between the different situations (remote activities and face-to-face activities).

Written evaluation of a scientific paper. Depending on the recent emergency situation, the exam may be in oral remote (webex) mode.
